Federal officials are investigating a "sophisticated cybersecurity attack" that compromised financial transactions with White Lake Township government.

Township leaders learned of the attack that compromised a financial transaction related to a new issue of infrastructure bonds on Nov. 21, according to a Wednesday press release from the White Lake Township Police Department.

Federal investigators and impacted financial institutions are coordinating with the township police department to further probe the incident, according to township police.

Local officials are placing certain aspects of the Oakland County township's new Civic Center project on Elizabeth Lake Road on hold while the investigation continues. The township is also comprehensively reviewing its internal systems and procedures, according to the township police department's news release.

Further details on the incident and investigation were not immediately available.

"We are committed to being transparent," White Lake Township police Chief Daniel Keller said in a statement. "As we learn more, we will keep you informed."

The cyberattack on White Lake Township is the latest of several cybersecurity incidents across the state in 2024.

A July cyberattack on Michigan Medicine exposed the health information of nearly 57,900 patients, the health system announced in September.

Another attack targeting McLaren Health Care briefly impacted information technology platforms before the Grand Blanc-based health care system restored them in August.

A cyberattack on Ascension Michigan Medical Partners also reduced clinical operations to manual and paper-based systems in May.
